Are you are looking for an easy DIY way to track your child's height and continue to mark it for the future to come? Look no further this one is just for you! Join me on a journey to make one of these life size rulers. Perfect for families always on the move such as military families or families who live in an apartment. It can be taken with you no matter where you go.
Supplies Needed:
1-2x6 board
Sandpaper(sander optional)
Tape measure
paint
clear spray-paint or polyurethane sealant
stain(optional)
Stencils (optional)
Directions
Once you are ready to start making your Life-sized Ruler,
1) you must start by sanding the 2x6 in order to make sure there are no rough edges and stop the possibility someone getting a nasty splinter.
2) decide whether or not you would like to stain the wood or paint it. My personal preference is staining. I took an old rag and some wood stain to gently stain the wood to the right shade i wanted. took more than one pass to get the color i was desiring. GLOVE up. Make sure you are weraing your gloves whenever using harsh chemicals such as wood stain/varnish. Let the stain dry completely. Dont be afriad to leave it a day or two. I know how difficult it can be to finish a single project when you have little ones running a muck at home.
3) Once your peice is completly dried either after staining or completely painting the 2x6, this is the point you take that handy dandy measuring tape to make your marks. Depending if you ending up with a 6ft or 8ft long board start marking each line just as you would see in a ruler. At 3"high make a 1" line, at 6" high make a 2" line, at 9" high make an 1" line, then at 1' make a 3" line. so on and so forth until you reach the very tip of your board
4) After making all the lines and measurements it is then time for you write each Foot number. You have a couple options here. You can use a stencil to paint out each number, free hand paint, use a Cricut or die cutting machine to make vinyl numbers, or you could even use stickers for each number.
5) Once Numbers have been placed and completed, then it is time to seal your project so it will last for years to come. you can use a clear spray paint for this or a brush on Polyurethane to do the job. I presonally prefer using a spray as it is easier to hide brush marks as there wont be any.
6) You can use anything to help mark down you child's height but I recommend using a sharpie to ensure it doesn’t come off. This way it’ll be there for years to come to reflect upon.
